While children have always been profoundly inspiring to me, it is also very challenging to capture their changing states of unconditioned innocence. I could have titled this sculpture Infant, or Newborn, but the swaddle framing the little face reminded me of how old women in Eastern Europe cover their heads with scarves, leaving only their faces showing. There is an endearing world in Russian for this, called Babushka, which I transformed into Babyshka, a ‘Baby with a Scarf’.
